Muscovy Ducklings -$8
Starter laying flock also available $20
If you’re on the fence about getting ducks or you don’t know the difference differences between Muscovy and other ducks, keep reading.
Muskovy ducks are the best backyard livestock. Muscovy ducks are so easy and so quiet. They are not quackers. They provide great pest control as they forage on insects. they are low maintenance.
The males hiss and make a throaty growling sound, and the female ninny. They are mostly completely silent.
Muskovy ducks do not need the same amount of water as ducks in the Mallard family. They need just enough water to provide fresh water for drinking and for bathing. When I change out the water to provide freshwater, I use the old water on my garden. It provides a good source of nitrogen.
Clipping their wings so that they stay in your yard is so easy. You will need to clip them once a year, but even if they grow back before you can get around to clipping them, they will stay if they have good reason. If they know where they’re getting their food and water and they have a safe place to nest. Muscovy will stay with you. We had a mother that was able to fly a short distance, but she only did so to keep up with her ducklings and did not leave our property.
When we do clip, it is very easy to herd them into their enclosure to get the job done.
Locking them up in an enclosure is not necessarily needed, however, I put my nesting boxes in there and have been successful getting these independent birds laying in them. Many Muskovy owners will tell you that they will lay anywhere and that they find their nest in all kinds of odd places, but we have been able to provide them some safe and private places that they enjoy laying in.
Leaving the enclosure open for them to go in and out freely has saved much work and time. I do not have to constantly clean the coop and lay down more bedding. I haven’t for months. When I do change out the bedding, it provides more material for my composting pile.
They provide large eggs that are higher than protein, fats, and omega-3 fatty acids. In three years when their egg laying production starts waning, they will produce ducklings for you to start over the next year.
They are a dual purpose duck meaning they lay eggs, but also provide meat for your family. Most of the meat is all red meat and many cook the breast like they would beef. In my opinion, they meat makes a good Barbacoa.
They are community minded. Many mothers will buddy up with other mothers to watch their nest and to take care of their ducklings. Even the Drake‘s getting involved with turning the eggs and watching the nest while the mother goes out to get herself food and bathe.
We are selling straight run ducklings, which means that you do not know whether they will be male or female. Our suggestion is to purchase at least 10 to 12 ducklings to ensure that you have at least a starter flock of a ratio no more than 1 Drake to 6 ducks and no less than 1 drake to 3 ducks. In my opinion, the ladder encourages over breeding so I try to stick around to six ducks to one Drake.
You will want to cull or process your extra drakes.
If anything here still sounds daunting to you or raising Muscovy is new to you, I will be available to help you with any questions and any tips that I can provide to make things easier.
If culling your extra drakes is something that you would prefer not to do. We can provide that service for a small fee. We can provide the meat for you or we can buy back the drakes. Several options were available to you.
Muscovy ducks are by far the easiest and most self-sufficient livestock we have experimented with. We love our flock.
